The Writing Program offers courses that fulfill two of the three undergraduate writing requirements: the systemwide Entry-Level Writing Requirement (ELWR) (Writing 1/1E) and UCSC’s general education Composition (“C”) requirement (Writing 2/2H). The third campus writing requirement, the Disciplinary Communication (“DC”) requirement, is satisfied by taking the designated course or series of courses in the major.
The Writing Program also offers courses for undergraduates who are acquiring English and Academic English at the same time. Currently, there are two such courses: Writing 25 and Writing 26.
All students place into required writing courses by completing the Directed Self-Placement (DSP) process. Learn more about DSP at our writing placement website.
Note: Students who began at UCSC prior to 2019 should contact a Writing Program advisor to discuss their requirements.
