Requirements in Writing Overview, Students Entering Fall 2018
Entry Level Writing and Composition Requirement
ELWR Satisfied: AWPE scores of 8+
If you earn a score of 8 or higher on the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE), you have satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR). After passing College 1, you are able to enroll in Writing 2, which satisfies the Composition (C) GE requirement. You must satisfy the C requirement by the start of the 7th quarter of enrollment.
ELWR Required: AWPE-ELL Scores of 2-5, and 6, AWPE Score of 6
If you have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR) prior to matriculation, you must enroll in the appropriate ELWR writing course every quarter until you have met the requirement. If you fail to enroll in the appropriate course, you lose a quarter of eligibility toward satisfying ELWR. Two pathways are available, and your score on the Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE) determines which pathway you must follow. You must satisfy the ELWR before the start of the 4th quarter of enrollment. Except students placed into Writing 25 who must satisfy ELWR before the start of the 5th quarter of enrollment.
AWPE-ELL score of 2-5
If you earn an AWPE-ELL score of 2-5 on the AWPE, you will be placed into the Multilingual Curriculum (MLC). In fall, you will take one MLC course concurrently with College 1. After completing the required MLC course(s), you will proceed to Writing 1. Once you have passed Writing 1, you will be able to enroll in Writing 2, which satisfies the Composition (C) GE requirement. You must satisfy the C requirement by the start of the 7th quarter of enrollment.
AWPE scores of 2-6, and AWPE-ELL score of 6
If you earn an AWPE score of 2-6 or an AWPE-ELL score of 6, you will take College 1 in the fall. After you successfully complete College 1 (C or higher), you will enroll in Writing 1. Once you have passed Writing 1, you will be able to enroll in Writing 2, which satisfies the Composition (C) GE requirement. You must satisfy the C requirement by the start of the 7th quarter of enrollment.
