Students entering 2020 and after - Nearing the ELWR Deadline

Update to Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR)

Per campus policy, the ELWR Requirement must be satisfied before the start of your 4th quarter at UCSC. Except students placed into Writing 25 who must satisfy ELWR before the start of the 5th quarter of enrollment. The ELWR deadline has been waived for the 2022-23 academic year (fall, winter and spring).

Students entering 2018 and After

Students enrolled 2018 – 2019 - ELWR Enrollment Hold

Students who do not satisfy ELWR before the start of the fourth quarter will be unable to enroll in classes until they have satisfied the ELWR.

Students placed in Writing 25 who do not satisfy ELWR before the start of the fifth quarter will be unable to enroll in classes until they have satisfied the ELWR.

You have not been barred from the University. Your enrollment is on hold until you satisfy the ELWR. Once you satisfy the ELWR, you will be able to enroll in classes once more.

If you have an ELWR enrollment hold you will need to submit an ELWR appeal packet of current coursework from a community college, or other current college writing or English course. This coursework must meet the appeals packet criteria.

The community college course alone will not satisfy ELWR and will not be transferable for credit. Only the submission of coursework from the class submitted in the ELWR appeal packet will be reviewed - not the course grade or transcript.
