Pathways to Satisfying the ELWR, Before Starting UCSC Fall 2018

 

Satisfying The Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR) Before Starting Classes At UCSC

High school seniors will receive detailed information about the universitywide UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) with their admissions materials.

Before enrolling, students can satisfy the ELWR by one or more of the following:

• 30 or better on the ACT, English Language Arts
• 30 or better on the ACT, Combined English/Writing (last administered June 2015)
• 680 or better on the SAT Reasoning Test, Writing (last administered January 2016)
• 680 or better on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing*
• 3 or above on either Advanced Placement Examination in English
• 5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A: Literature exam (formerly known as Higher Level English A1 exam)
• 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A: Literature exam (formerly known as Standard Level English A1 exam)
• 5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A: Language and Literature exam
• 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A: Language and Literature exam
• C or better in a transferable college course in English composition
• 8+ on the universitywide AWPE, offered in the spring of senior year in high school at various locations around the state

*UC is accepting a score of 680 or better on the SAT, Evidence-Based Reading and Writing to satisy the Entry Level Writing Requirement on a pilot basis, beginning with new students entering UC in Fall 2018. The pilot will remain in effect until a new policy is adopted by the Academic Senate.

Students should confirm that the testing agency or school has sent its official score report or transcript to UCSC. To ensure your transcripts and test scores have been received, continue to check your student portal at my.ucsc.edu (FAQs). For further questions regarding transcripts and test scores, please contact the Admissions Office.

If unable to take the spring universitywide exam:

• 8+ composite score on the September AWPE offered during Welcome Week at UCSC (see Announcements for date and time).

Students who took the spring universitywide AWPE cannot retake the exam at UCSC.
