THE UCSC C1 GE REQUIREMENT HAS TWO PARTS:

I. Satisfaction of the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR)

If you are an incoming first-year student who has never enrolled at UCSC before, taking and passing a C1-level course at a community college will satisfy the ELWR (and C1). If you are taking a community college class to satisfy the C1 requirement prior to your first quarter of enrollment at UCSC, contact an adviser at your college to discuss procedures for enrolling in the correct core course.

If you have already been a student at UCSC and have not yet satisfied the ELWR, you cannot satisfy the ELWR at a community college. It must be satisfied by exam or by portfolio at UCSC.

II. Satisfaction of a C1-level composition course (with a grade of C or better)

If you are an incoming first-year student who has never enrolled at UCSC before, taking and passing a C1-level community college course will satisfy C1 (and the ELWR).

If you have already been a student at UCSC and have not yet satisfied the ELWR, taking and passing a C1-level community college course will satisfy the course-based part of the UCSC C1 GE requirement, but it will not satisfy the ELWR. If you have satisfied the ELWR but have not satisfactorily completed a C1-level course, please be aware that ordinarily students must take and pass a college Core course to satisfy C1. If you satisfy C1 via a C1-level community college course, you will likely be directed to take a section of your college Core course to satisfy C2.  See an adviser at your college if you have questions about this.
