May be satisfied during UCSC Summer Session. Under certain circumstances, transfer students may satisfy the W requirement prior to starting classes at UCSC; see Methods of Satisfying Writing Requirements Before Starting Classes at UCSC.

The September exam is a campus exam for students who have already taken classes here. It is system-wide exam for incoming frosh who have never taken the AWPE and wish to attempt to satisfy the ELWR before classes start, or for students who received a score of 3 on an AP English exam and wish to attempt to satisfy the C1 before classes start; see Methods of Satisfying Writing Requirements Before Starting Classes at UCSC.

Students must take the September exam to be eligible for ELWR satisfaction by portfolio appeal packet review, and should notify campus ELWR coordinator Sarah-Hope Parameter (shparmet@ucsc.edu) that they will be submitting a portfolio appeal packet in conjunction with the September exam. Students who wish to create a portfolio appeal packet should enroll in a C1-level (or C2-level) community college writing course over the summer.

Students who have satisfied the ELWR, but who do not receive a minimum grade of C (2.0) or Pass in their college Core course should talk with a college adviser immediately about ways to satisfy their college and writing requirements. Students may satisfy C1 via a C1-level (or C2-level) community college course; however this method of satisfying the C1 requirement will not satisfy the college requirement. These students may be directed to take their college Core 80B course.

(Applicable only to pre-Fall 2005 Students) Writing 1 is no longer available as a course selection. To satisfy the C requirement, you should request a permission number for a Writing 2 class during your first-pass enrollment period by sending an e-mail message to writingprogram@ucsc.edu even if you plan to take the AWPE prior to the start of the quarter. (Please include your student ID number and the Class Number of the Writing 2 class section you prefer in your request.) Upon successful completion of Writing 2, your record will be updated to show satisfaction of the C requirement.
