View News Enrollment Procedures For Winter Quarter 2010 Enrollment Procedures for Winter 2010 (Downloadable version) Students who have satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR), and completed the C1 requirement by passing their Core course with a grade of C or better, still need to satisfy the C2 requirement. Completing Writing 2, Rhetoric and Inquiry, with a minimum grade of C or Pass, satisfies this requirement. First year students should plan to take Writing 2 in winter or spring 2010. All Writing 2 classes teach writing as a process that involves strategies for generating ideas, revising, and editing. All Writing 2 classes will require a significant amount of reading and writing. However, while all Writing 2 classes share the same goals and practices, each class has a distinctly different focus. Before Priority Enrollment begins, the Writing Program will post descriptions online of each Writing 2 class to be offered winter quarter. These descriptions will give you an idea of what each class will focus on, including its specific goals, the questions or issues at the heart of the course, and its writing assignments, readings, and required books. You should read carefully each of the course descriptions and try to enroll in the class that you think will be of most interest to you. UCSC's policies require that students satisfy both the C1 and C2 requirements prior to their 7th quarter of enrollment, and that and that they satisfy C2 before satisfying the Disciplinary Communication (DC) requirement or the Writing-Intensive (W) requirement. Students must take either the DC or the W general education requirement, depending on which set of general education requirements they are eligible for. If you don't satisfy the C2 before your 7th quarter, you won’t be able to take classes at UCSC until you satisfy C2 elsewhere. IF YOU HAVE ALREADY SATISFIED THE ELWR: You should try to enroll in Writing 2 during your first-pass enrollment appointment. If the class you want to enroll in is full, you can try again after 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4. Additional seats will be made available at that time, but they fill quickly on a first-come, first-served basis. You should enroll in a back-up class in case you are not able to secure a space in Writing 2 in winter 2010. (It is offered again in spring 2010.) IF YOU HAVE NOT YET SATISFIED THE ELWR: A number of seats in each Writing 2 class are held in reserve until after the results of the Nov. 21 Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE), and exam appeals, have been recorded. Scores for the November AWPE will be available on your MyUCSC portal after 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 25. If you do not receive a passing score on the November AWPE, you should submit your appeal packet to your Core instructor on Monday, Nov. 30. Results for the appeal will be available on your MyUCSC portal by 5:00 p.m., Thursday, December 3. If you satisfy the ELWR by exam or by portfolio packet appeal, you should try to enroll in Writing 2 after 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4. These classes fill quickly, so you should enroll in a back-up class during your regular enrollment appointments in case you are not able to secure a space in Writing 2 in winter 2010. (It is offered again in spring 2010). IF YOU HAVE NOT SATISFIED THE ELWR BY THE END OF FALL QUARTER: You must enroll in Writing 20 in winter 2010. Writing 20 is designed to help you with your academic writing. Writing 20 students will produce a portfolio of papers to submit for satisfaction of the ELWR at the end of winter quarter. All seats for Writing 20 classes will open for enrollment to first-year students beginning at noon on Friday, December 4.
