November Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE)
Students who have already taken classes at UCSC and have not yet satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement may repeat the exam in an effort to satisfy the ELWR. A passing score (8 or above out of a possible 12) on the AWPE may be used to satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR).

CURRENT CORE STUDENTS: If you pass the exam, you have satisfied the ELWR. If you do not pass the exam, but feel your writing is strong, you may appeal the exam results on the basis of your Core papers. A successful appeal means you have satisfied the ELWR.
If you earn a grade of "C" or better in your Core course, once you satisfy the ELWR you will have satisfied the C1 composition requirement.
Students who have not satisfied the ELWR must enroll in appropriate writing classes (WRIT 20, 21, 23) every quarter until they have met the requirement.
- Winter: Writing 20
- Spring: Writing 21
- Fall of sophomore year: Writing 23
Students who have not satisfied the ELWR by spring of their first year at UCSC may opt to take an appropriate course over the summer during UCSC's summer session, or at a community college to accumulate a portfolio of papers to submit for consideration of satisfying the ELWR. To satisfy the ELWR in this manner, students must first take the September 2010 Analytical Writing Placement Exam. When they submit the exam, students may also submit a portfolio of their summer papers. This portfolio will be evaluated if the AWPE is scored as non-passing. Note that these papers must be text-based and academic. The portfolio must include copies of these papers with instructor comments, though students may also include revisions in response to these comments. Students are strongly encouraged to contact the ELWR Coordinator Sarah-Hope Parmeter (shparmet@ucsc.edu) before summer begins to discuss these procedures.
