Upcoming AWPE for Current Students

Students who have already taken classes at UCSC and have not yet satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement may repeat the exam in an effort to satisfy the ELWR. A passing score (8 or above out of a possible 12) on the AWPE may be used to satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR).

Date: Saturday, May 30, 2009
Time: 10:30 - 12:30 p.m.
Location: Kresge 327*

*Students needing exam accommodation should contact the Disability Resource Center at 459-2089 or by e-mail at drc@ucsc.edu.

Students who have not satisfied the ELWR must enroll in appropriate writing classes (WRIT 20, 21, 23) until they have met the requirement.

  • Fall: college Core, and if appropriate, Writing 22A
  • Winter: Writing 20
  • Spring: Writing 21
  • Fall of sophomore year: Writing 23

Students who have not satisfied the ELWR by spring of their first year at UCSC may opt to take an appropriate course over the summer during UCSC's summer session, or at a community college to accumulate a portfolio of papers to submit for consideration of satisfying the ELWR. (To satisfy the ELWR in this manner, students must also take the September Analytical Writing Placement Exam on September 20, 2009 to meet the UC requirement that the ELWR be satisfied at the UC campus where the student matriculated.)

Students are strongly encouraged to contact the ELWR Coordinator Sarah-Hope Parmeter (shparmet@ucsc.edu) before summer begins to discuss these procedures.

THE C REQUIREMENT (pre-2005 students only):

A score of 11 or 12 may be used to satisfy the C composition General Education Requirement, required of students who started at UCSC before Fall 2005. Such students also have the option of appealing the results of the AWPE.  In order to appeal the results, you must have taken the exam within one calendar year prior to your appeal.
